Keegan Dewitt
Islands

Pop

4.5 of 5 stars

Keegan DeWitt has embarked upon the third phase of his full-length career, and on Islands, his latest release, he demonstrates the dexterity of the highest quality musicians, crafting a menagerie of delicate, cinematic songs that beg to be explored.

DeWitt’s voice, like a blanket on a cold rainy day, is the album’s biggest asset. From the first song on Islands, DeWitt’s purr instantly draws the listener in, transferring the emotion packed into the lyrics directly to his audience.

Like Roman Candle, the band that produced Islands and with which he regularly plays, DeWitt never falters in intensity. Instead, he translates the frantic energy of his rock and roll counterparts and fellow Nashville crooners into a soft, powerful brand of pop.

And while Islands utilizes a plethora of instruments, the album never loses its effortlessness. DeWitt maintains a nuanced softness that never sounds contrived or overdone — on the contrary, he makes harmonica-laden tunes like “Walk Alone,” a sorrowful song about the difficulties of starting anew after an unsuccessful relationship, sound perfectly natural.

“Complicated” epitomizes everything that DeWitt gets right on Islands. From its initial chords, the  melody transfixes as he sings “Need it, fake it, you can’t complicate it, it’s love.”

The bittersweet lyrics and steady, building momentum create an incredible intimacy, especially when violins and trumpets whine slowly in the background.

The depth on Islands — ranging from its haunting vocals to its multi-dimensional instrumentation — seems limitless, the kind of record that withstands multiple listens without ever growing dull. Islands is like an iceberg— and clearly, DeWitt aims to engage listeners far below surface level.

Stormy Weather Music Video Shoot

After a busy couple weeks up in New York to work on an upcoming film score and play some tour dates, I brought my close friend Aaron Katz down to Nashville to shoot a video for "Stormy Weather". I don't wanna spoil too much, so I'll just show you a couple pictures.

Tar Heels Win National Champhionship

Below, you will witness what some Bridgeport, a little french wine (brought from Paris and saved for this occasion) and a NCAA national championship will get you. Featuring Logan Matheny (Roman Candle) and the incredible Bryan Cates on guitar.

SXSW Update: Days 3 & 4

As I write this, I'm in the van on my way back to Nashville. We are all pretty exhausted and ready for a couple days off. Friday was another beautiful day in Austin, and we got into town pretty early and I ran over to the Tea for Tenn showcase to catch my friends Sarah Siskind and Madi Diaz play some quick sets. I hadn't seen Madi in a good while since she's been out on tour and it was good to catch up and make each other laugh.

Next I met up with the amazingly talented Julia Tepper. She played all of the violins on "Islands" and is in two great bands from NY (Frances, The Americans). It was great to catch up with her.

After that, I headed down 6th to the Emo's tent to meet up with my manager Robert and his brother Tim Williams. They had been talking about this band Fanfarlo and I thought I should check it out. I have to say, it was absolutely amazing. They were fantastic. It's such an incredible experience to go into a show cold and really be blown away. There was a journalistic standing next to me taking notes, and they were... perhaps... the most uninspired, idiotic notes I could have imagined. "Fanfarlo... 'clap your hands' vocals, 'energetic', 'sloppy and youthful'". It was the "clap your hands vocals" note that got me the most. That seems like the problem with a bunch of journalists at these festivals, no acknowledgement of where Clap Your Hands might being stealing their style, instead just.... "clap your hands vocals". Anyways....

SXSW Update: Days 1 & 2

SXSW has been a truly fantastic and utterly exhausting experience thus far. On the way here, the prospect of having 4 shows (7 total including Roman Candle) in 4 days was exciting. So far... it's all been a bit exhausting, while at the same time being absolutely wonderful. Between getting here (17 hours of driving), getting badges/wristbands (another 2 hours), getting to the venues, playing (and trying to play well), then treking all your stuff across town to the next club with only moments to spare.... well it's a lot to take in. That's not even to mentioning all the amazing bands that I'd love to see, but barely have time to track down.

Wednesday started with an amazing acoustic/strings performance at the Belfast/Nashville showcase, put on by the British Embassy. It was run by an outstanding group of people, and I got to catch up with all my Ten Out of Tenn friends (Trent Dabbs, Jeremy Lister, Tyler James, Griffin House, etc). The show was super packed (especially for a 12:30 show on the first day of the festival). It was a great way to start everything. After that, we peeled Skip out of the van (where he was laid out with a fever) and worked our way through an acoustic Roman Candle set. We then ran over to the convention center and sat in monumental lines to get all of our badges/wristbands. We met up with the Paper Route guys there and said hello. Super super nice.
